Category: "Schengen Visas to Go Digital"
The EU has announced that Schengen Visas will be fully digital, replacing the previous passport sticker with a modern, secure cryptographically signed barcode (E-Visa).
What will change? Previously, applicants for Schengen Visas had to submit hard copies of the required documents, but now they will be able to submit them digitally via a Centralized Online Platform (EU-managed portal).
The EU Visa Application Form will be used to complete the Visa Application Form, upload supporting documents, pay Visa Fees, update Visa Status Check, etc. online, reducing the need for in-person submissions. Instead of a physical Visa Sticker, a digitally signed 2D barcode will be issued and securely linked to the passports of travelers.
The reasons for the digital system are - Digital Visas are designed to prevent counterfeiting or copying, speed up entry checks at Schengen borders, and reduce the need for applicants to submit hard copies of numerous documents.
What are the benefits for travelers?
Applicants will save time, avoid having to travel to embassies or Biometric Collection Centers with multiple documents, and reduce the risk of visa rejections due to document errors.
The Digital Schengen Visa will modernize travel to European countries and make travel smoother and safer.
Currently, the digitalization of the Schengen Visa system is still in progress, and from 2026, you will be able to apply online through the digital application platform on the EU Visa Application Platform (EUVAP). It has been announced that by 2028, only digital barcode visas will be fully used.
